(36” x 36”) Oil on canvas 2016
This painting was created as a tribute to David Bowie following his untimely passing in 2016. As one of the first paintings I ever made, it carries visible imperfections, reflecting my growth as an artist.
The composition is built around the concept of the divine triad, a sacred concept found in many ancient cultures, which I used to symbolize Bowie’s continual reinvention throughout his various stage personas. He is interpreted here in the following three forms: Ziggy Stardust, the Thin White Duke, and Bowie in his later years.
The Blackstar is depicted in the background among the triad and references his final work, while also functioning as a cosmic symbol of death and rebirth. His name is intertwined with the galaxy itself and is joined by the smoke of the Thin White Duke’s cigarette. The lightning bolt associated with his character Aladdin Sane appears as a constellation, while the planet Mars is located nearby as a tribute to his famous song "Life on Mars?"
Ziggy Stardust’s garment is inscribed with Bowie’s song titles, which transforms his body into a living archive of his music and influence. Sheepishly, I have to admit, Bowie’s work deeply shaped me, especially during my youth. This painting was my way of honoring that at the time, which was less of a technical achievement and more of an homage to an artist whom I admired greatly.
